What does a microwave meal taste like after 54 years of research and development? Hopefully pretty darn good. Swanson, makers of the "original TV dinner" provided me with my lunch today - a cheap ($1.35) microwave turkey meal, complete with mashed potatoes, stuffing, and corn. While the portions seemed a bit diminutive, I have to admit that it tasted surprisingly good. With a little No-Salt, the corn tasted awesome, and the mini slabs of turkey had a good flavor - one looked like dark meat and the other looked white. Of course, it was more like deli meat than an actual sliced turkey. But that's to be expected...
Can I complain? Well, the potatoes were a little dry, and there were sections of stuffing around the edge that were crispy. It's hard to say whether my expectations were higher due to their long-term standing in the tv dinner industry (and the advertising of such a claim on the box), but for $1.35, I'd say it was money well spent. Then again, 54 years is a very long time. I would hope that if I spent that long refining a single product, the only complaints would be where to buy more of it.
