a new dawn...of the dead

Okay, I admit it. I may have been overreacting when I was lamenting the commercial-spawned "death" of Halloween. I guess I'm a bit of an elitist when it comes to DIY holiday culture. I have to admit that I hold more respect for people who work through their problems instead of just throwing money at them. But I do understand the concept behind paying for convenience, and I know that some people are just more creative than others. (I'm still sticking to my guns regarding those obnoxious inflatable lawn decorations, though. They just need to go away.)

If anything, I know that I have to keep a positive outlook on the holidays for my children's sake. There was something delightfully sublime about Halloween when I was a kid. I don't know if it was the crisp, cool weather, the rustling leaves under the silvery moonlight, the promise of candy, or the spooks lurking around every corner. But whatever "it" was, I loved it. And inflatable decorations or not, the Halloween spirit is still alive and well in certain parts of the neighborhood.

I want my kids to enjoy the same trick or treating, bobbing for apples, and scary stories that I experienced at their age. So I'm going to file that chip on my shoulder for a little while and do my best to remember how Halloween became my favorite holiday in the first place.
