a dying breed

For dinner, I took the kids to a buffet near the hotel. Since we only have one vehicle and Choosymom needed it for work, I had to find a place within walking distance from the hotel. Honestly, I haven't eaten at a buffet like that in a very long time. And it wasn't very good. The building was old, with missing panels in the drop ceiling and this annoying vibrating air unit. The food was typical geriatric buffet fare - very bland, lots of old stand-byes like mashed potatoes, roast beef, fried chicken, carrots and corn. They had good-looking ribs, but they were almost as chewy as beef jerky. The saving grace for the meal was their delicious pecan pie. Had it not been for the two servings of pie that I ate, I would have considered it a failure.

These types of buffets are a dying breed. I suspect that the only types of people who can really appreciate them anymore are people who are very set in their ways and those accepting of dull recipes. It would be one thing if the food was really tasty. It wasn't bad; it was just very run-of-the-mill.

I felt bad for the young woman working there. She was playing the part of hostess, waitress, busser, and cashier. She was running all over the restaurant trying to keep up. I usually don't type very high at buffets since all they usually do is refill your drinks and take away plates, but in this case I gave her a good 20+ percent for her efforts. I doubt we'll be back.
