strange taste in frozen treats?

Today, choosymom and I spent about half of the day trying to locate a pipe fitting for the water supply of our icemaker. After visiting a hardware store, plumbing store, and the local Wal-Mart, we finally managed to "engineer" a solution.

On the way home, we stopped at Sonic to grab a couple of slushes during their half price "Happy Hour". Choosymom was in the mood for a Dr. Pepper, but wanted the ice consistency of a slush, so I made a special request for a cherry Dr. Pepper slush. For my own treat, I opted for a strawberry fruit slush with some vanilla syrup. When we paid for our mid-afternoon treats, the young girl handling our order apologized that she "couldn't guarantee that they'll taste any good." She proceeded in explaining that she thought that our choices of drinks sounded disgusting.

I don't really understand what is so gross about a cherry Dr. Pepper over shaved ice, and my strawberry and vanilla slush is about as close as you can get to a cheap strawberries and cream during their happy hour. Is our taste in frozen sweets so strange?
